Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
